Tesla Model 3 Rear Underwell Fridge Review: Surprisingly Practical for Road Trips

If you drive a Tesla Model 3 long enough, eventually you start looking for better ways to travel comfortably — especially on road trips. After trying portable coolers and ice packs that never quite worked, I finally picked up a rear underwell fridge designed specifically for the Tesla Model 3. After several trips with it, I can honestly say it’s one of the more useful accessories I’ve bought for the car.

Perfect Fit for the Model 3

The biggest advantage immediately becomes obvious: this fridge fits directly into the rear underwell storage compartment like it was factory-designed for it. No sliding around, no wasted trunk space, and no awkward setup.

For Standard Range Model 3 owners, power options are limited, so the fridge includes a very long cable that runs all the way to the 12V outlet under the front center armrest. I routed mine along the passenger side and tucked it neatly underneath the floor mats. Once installed, it’s surprisingly clean and unobtrusive.

Quiet and Efficient

One thing I was worried about was noise. Portable fridges can sometimes sound like a small generator running in your trunk.

Thankfully, this one is almost silent after it reaches temperature. Road noise completely masks whatever little sound it makes. Power consumption also seems minimal once cooled down.

My routine now is simple:

  • Plug it in about an hour before leaving while the car is still charging at home
  • Let it pre-cool
  • Load food and drinks before departure

It actually cools faster than expected, but pre-cooling helps reduce battery usage during driving.

Airflow Matters More Than You Think

There is one important thing to know before buying this fridge: airflow is critical.

The unit comes with a hard plastic grate that replaces the standard rear well cover. The grate protects the fridge while still allowing ventilation, which is smart design. However, because the fridge sits inside the enclosed trunk compartment, it still needs additional air circulation to work efficiently.

In real-world use, I found that cracking open one or both rear seats slightly makes a huge difference. It allows cabin air to circulate through the trunk area and helps the fridge maintain colder temperatures much more effectively.

If you keep the rear compartment completely sealed off, cooling performance drops noticeably.

The App Is Clunky — But Functional

The Bluetooth app experience definitely feels generic. To find it, you need to search for “TESLA FRIDGE” in the App Store.

The app itself looks like one of those standard control apps, but honestly, it gets the job done:

  • Temperature monitoring
  • Cooling adjustments
  • Power settings

Connection can take a little patience during setup, but once connected, I’ve never had issues controlling it while driving.

Storage Space: Small but Useful

This is not a giant camping fridge, and it’s not meant to be.

What it is good for:

  • Drinks
  • Snacks
  • A few grocery items
  • 2–3 meals for road trips
  • Cold takeout food

For daily use and travel convenience, that’s honestly enough.

Cleaning is simple too. A quick wipe-down every once in a while keeps it fresh.

Final Verdict

This Tesla Model 3 rear underwell fridge fills a very specific niche — and it does it well.

It’s quiet, efficient, integrates cleanly into the car, and adds a surprising amount of convenience for trips and daily driving. The airflow requirement is something buyers should understand beforehand, and the app could definitely be better, but neither issue has been a dealbreaker for me.

If you road trip often, carry groceries regularly, or simply want cold drinks available at all times, this is a genuinely useful accessory for the Model 3.

Pros

  • Perfect fit for Model 3 rear underwell
  • Extremely quiet after cooling
  • Low power usage
  • Convenient for road trips
  • Clean cable routing possible
  • Easy to maintain

Cons

  • Needs proper airflow to cool efficiently
  • Small storage capacity
  • App feels generic and slow to connect

Overall: good buy. I like it.
